Using Your Calendar to Maximize Your Personal Growth

Personal growth October 10, 2017 By Paige Smith

Each day, often before we even get out of bed, we have things that are vying for our attention. Before our alarms go off, alerts of new emails hitting our inbox on our phone or reminders for upcoming events on our calendar may jar us awake. We often wake up and find ourselves catapulted straight into that day’s list of priorities.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have more control over your day? We make time for family and friends, for going to church, for going to work, etc. But how often do you spend time devoted to becoming the best version of yourself?

Personal growth is about being committed to continual learning, developing our individual talents and doing what we can to reach our potential both personally and professionally.

Here are some tips to help you maximize your Personal Growth with the help of your calendar:

  • Create a “time budget.” If you keep a mobile phone calendar or a planner, use time blocks to set aside time for important activities that you can focus on without distractions. Schedule and keep these appointments with yourself and others.
  • Keep your calendar up-to-date. If you are going to be out of the office, if you had a cancelled appointment, or if you have free time that you need to “budget,” make sure your calendar reflects it. Keeping your calendar up-to-date helps you stay organized and will let others know when you will or will not be available.
  • Share your calendar If you work with a team, it’s a good idea to share your calendars with each other. This will help keep scheduling simple and will let others know where you are, what you are doing or when you will be free again, in the event someone is looking for you. If you log personal items on your calendar, you don’t have to share full details. You can share availability only, limited details, or full details, based on your preference. If you are unsure how to share your calendar, click here to search instructions (based on the calendar software you use).
  • Give more permissions to an assistant. If you have an assistant or someone to help with your day-to-day logistics, you can delegate access to your calendars for them to manage more effectively. By the way, If you choose, you can also allow them to have access to send and receive emails on your behalf. To learn more about delegating access, click here to search instructions (based on the calendar software you use).
  • Give yourself time. In between appointments, give yourself a couple of minutes to take a break, clean up from a previous meeting, setup for another one, etc. To accomplish this, schedule it into your calendar. If you give yourself time in between meetings, you will almost certainly feel less rushed.
  • Schedule recurring meetings. If you have a standing meeting, appointment, break, etc. make sure you schedule this as a recurring meeting so your calendar will stay updated. Manually logging appointments each week could take up valuable time that could be spent on other tasks.

Not only will these tips maximize your personal growth, they will also help you spend life wisely by allowing you to focus on what's most important.
