Getting in the daily recommended amount of exercise each day can be challenging. And, for most us at First United, it’s easy to live a mostly sedentary lifestyle considering many of our jobs require us to sit at a desk and work on a computer. Of course, being sedentary can lead to a lot of health issues, both mental and physical. But, with a little planning ahead and a healthy dose of determination, we can make activity happen! Here are few ideas on how to do just that:
- Walk in place during conference calls
- Set reminders on your calendar to take breaks and walk or stretch each day at a time that’s convenient and realistic for you
- Use the restroom farthest from your work area
- Take the stairs
- Incorporate walking into department meetings
- Park far away from the entrance you use
- "Desk-ercise!" Do leg lifts, squats, lunges, push-ups, etc. in your work area if possible
To get us on our way to being more active during the day, consider something fun like a "Take 10" Challenge to encourage yourself and others to move more! A "Take 10" challenge could be something like taking a walk break for 10-minute intervals each workday for a month with a coworker, friend, etc. Start each day with a 10-minute walk, take a 10-minute activity break in the afternoon, and finish with a 10-minute walk before the day is over.
Breaking up exercise into three 10-minute increments has been shown to provide health benefits. And research shows that making an effort to move more throughout the day can help reduce stress and improve circulation, musculoskeletal function, and mental and cardiovascular health. Doing this challenge with a partner will give you more accountability and motivation to complete the activity goals, as well as provide a boost in mental health by having someone to socialize and bond with.
We are encouraging everyone—whether you are already active or not—to take the challenge! So bring your walking shoes to work and take the challenge with us*! Find a buddy and be active for three 10-minute intervals every day. It’s a great way to fit exercise into your day in a convenient, safe, and effective manner.
Let’s take healthy steps together!
