It’s that time of the year again as we quickly approach the Christmas season. But what exactly does that mean to you? For most people, it consists of a time to decorate their house with blinking lights, putting up a Christmas tree filled with sentimental ornaments and soon to be stockpiled with gifts for loved ones.
For children it is a time of anticipation of what Santa will bring down the chimney in hopes of being on the nice list. And of course for most of us, we understand the Meaning of Christmas and the “reason for the season” as it relates to the birth of Jesus. But I wanted to share something with you and I hope it will broaden your view on this subject.
For me personally, the Meaning of Christmas represents so much more than just the birth of Jesus.
Several years ago I heard a song called “I Celebrate The Day” by Relient K.
This song has completely changed my outlook on the Meaning of Christmas. One of the lines in the song says “And the first time that You opened Your eyes did You realize that You would be my Savior? And the first breath that left Your lips, did You know that it would change this world forever?”
That line puts so much significance into the birth of Jesus! Think back to the first time you saw your child at birth and that moment they first opened their eyes. Now think about the moment they took their first breath. How innocent and pure that celebration of life was.
But it gets better! As if that is not powerful enough, toward the end of the song it goes on to say, “And I, I celebrate the day that You were born to die, so I could one day pray for You to save my life.”
Once I heard that phrase it put the meaning of Christmas and the birth of Jesus into a completely different perspective for me! To understand that Jesus was “born to die” literally changed my understanding on the Meaning of Christmas and the birth of Jesus.
When Jesus was born, God gave us the ultimate gift of life. Not only did He give life to Jesus, but He gave the opportunity for eternal life thru Jesus for you and for me. At that very moment, there was victory over death! God had to fulfill His plan of sending His one and only Son to this earth to be “born to die.” Amen! I get overwhelmed by His goodness every time I think about it!
So, I encourage each of you to spend some time celebrating this Christmas season and reflect on the fact that not only was Jesus born but that He was “born to die”.

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
