Give Thanks

Faith November 7, 2022 By Paige Smith

Not long ago, I read a quote that said, “What if you woke up today with only the things you thanked God for yesterday?” With the Thanksgiving holiday just around the corner, I feel like this quote resonates strongly with all of us.

What if we really did wake up with only the things we thanked God for yesterday? Think about all of the things you may not have today. Often we find ourselves praying in times of hardship, in times of sorrow, in times of need, but how often do we spend time giving thanks?

Each November, I challenge myself to write down all of the things I am grateful for each day. This could be in the form of a gratitude journal, or just a simple list. At the end of the month, it’s really neat to look back on all of the small things and the big things that I wrote down over the course of those 30 days and keep it as a reminder throughout the rest of the year.

This year, I encourage us all to keep up the habit of gratitude. Start a list, a journal, or even a memo in your phone. Take a couple of minutes each day to write down something that you are grateful for that day. Keep in mind the things we often take for granted – a roof over our heads, clean water, food on the table, a warm bed to sleep in. If you “run out of things” to be grateful for, ask yourself that big question – “What if you woke up today, with only the things you thanked God for yesterday?” I promise there is always something to be thankful for.

“Be joyful always. Pray continually. Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
