Recently I began thinking, “What in the world do bunnies, baskets and eggs have to do with Easter?” I did a quick internet search only to find out that what I had believed about these symbols all my life actually had nothing at all to do with Easter. Take a few minutes and check it out for yourself. You may be as surprised as me. Yikes!
Easter treats often seem to overshadow the actual gift of the life of Jesus. But you can still enjoy the traditions of Easter without losing sight of the Son of God.
- Spring is the season of birth and new life. Talking to your children about Easter reminds us that we can always begin anew through the love and forgiveness of Jesus.
- Care for God’s creatures. Bunnies and chicks and all of the animals are here to share our world. Remind children that we should be kind to animals in the spirit of Jesus.
- Give thanks. Every day is a good day to count your blessings. Ask your family to write something they are thankful for and enclose it in a plastic egg. When it’s time to say grace, everyone draws an egg from the basket and reads the blessing.
- Be generous. Everyone should enjoy feeling loved on Easter. Help your children to create an Easter basket for someone in need or an elderly person at church.
- Watch the sunrise. Enjoy God’s greatest show as a prayerful start to Easter morning.
- Start your own Easter tradition inspired by the message of Jesus.

More important than filling Easter eggs is filling the day with peace, love and reflection on the love of Jesus. Hallelujah! He is risen!
